There’s something for everyone at St. Bernard School. We’re committed to helping our students discover more about themselves, their gifts and talents, as well as the world around them. Extracurricular activities provide students with this opportunity to discover.
The following activities will be offered in the 2011-2012 school year. Depending upon student interest, others may be added. See Mr. Ayres, Student Activities Director, if interested at e-mail.

• Ambassadors Adviser: Mrs. Catherine Brown
Description: The Student Ambassador Club is a service club open to both middle school and high school students. The Club works with the Admissions Department to welcome all interested students to St. Bernard School. Ambassadors are student leaders responsible for making incoming students feel comfortable and good about choosing SBS. Ambassadors contribute their efforts and services to events such as the annual Open House, Back-to-School Night, the Ice Cream Social, the Shadow Program, and many more. The Ambassador Club gives student members an opportunity to share their pride and enthusiasm in being a part of the SBS community. Service completed as a student ambassador may fulfill community service hour requirements.
• Arts Workshop Advisers: Mr. David Belval, Mrs. Patty Kelley, Mrs. Lorraine Kainz
Description: The Arts Workshop allows students with artistic talents to receive guidance from members of the Art Department to complete various projects of interest to that student. They also provide assistance with art projects for the elderly from St. Joseph Living Center in Willimantic.
•Chess Club Adviser: Mr. Brian Sheridan
Description: The Chess Club meets weekly to teach the fundamentals of playing chess to novice playes and to provide opportunities for the more experienced players.
•Drama Club, The Saints Players Advisers: Mr. John Ayres, Mr. Richard Pilny (Technical)
Description:The Saints Players produce two main stage productions annually, one in November/December and another in May. The organization is open to students with an interest in all aspects of stage performance, from acting to set/sound/lighting design, costuming, make-up and management. Students from the middle school through high school may audition for any acting roles in the productions.
• Environmental Club Advisor: Ms. Heather Fitzgibbons
Description: Students interested in the stewardship of our environment engage in activities focusing on issues such as pollution, bio-degradable materials, recycling, and energy.
Description: Mock Trial provides students with an understanding of the nation’s judicial system and offers experience with critical thinking skills. Students prepare a trial issue and present their case competitively before a judge.
• Multicultural Club Adviser: Mrs. Gisela Anagnostis
Description: The Multicultural Club meets twice a month to explore the cultural aspects of many different countries, including the film, cooking, music and dance. They also assist in preparing activities to demonstrate the culture of these countries.
• Music Activities Adviser: Mrs. Celeste Milukas
Description: Students with a variety of musical abilities, from instrumental to vocal, participate in activities to showcase their talents. Praise Choir, Pep Band, Jazz Band, and String Ensemble meet after school on a regular basis to prepare a variety of pieces which are presented annually during the school year. The Praise Band and Choir support the liturgical life of SBS during monthly Masses.
• National Art Honor Society Advisers: Mr. David Belval, Mrs. Lorraine Kainz
Description: The National Art Honor Society recognizes the academic and artistic talents of our upper level students. Students are admitted by selection only.
• National Honor Society Advisers: Mrs. Nicole Nelson
Description: The National Honor Society (Dr. Thomas Dooley Chapter) recognizes the academic and leadership talents of our Junior and Senior students. Eligible students must maintain a B+ (88 average) and demonstrate leadership, character and service. NHS members will serve their fellow students as tutors.
• Speech Club Adviser: Ms. Mary Gilbert
Description: This organization provides students interested in public speaking with opportunities to learn public speaking skills while having fun! Students gain confidence and become leaders. Areas to be covered include persuasive and informative speaking, preparation for contests, oral interpretation. Students are expected to use the skills developed in an annual program.
• Student Council Advisers: Mrs. Susan McGuckin, Ms. Sara McGrath
Description: The Student Council is responsible for Student Life at SBS. In addition to various service projects, such as the canned food drive, clothing drive, they also prepare pep rallies. Homecoming, and cross-class activities, such as the Halloween Dress-up Day and Christmas decorating contests, are also handled by the Student Council.
• Student Government Advisers: Mrs. Cynthia DeLucia, Mrs. Mary Beth Baillargeon (Senior Class), Mrs. Jennifer Feldman (Junior Class), Ms. Heather Fitzgibbons (Sophomore Class), Mrs. Nicole Nelson (Freshman Class)
Description: Each class will elect Class Officers to attend to the activities of that class. They form a class council or senate composed of the officers and two homeroom representatives to work out the details of their activities with the assistance of the advisor.
• Summer Arts Program Advisers: Mr. David Belval, Mrs. Patty Kelley, Mrs. Lorraine Kainz
Description: This summer program provides students with an interest in art with opportunities to explore art activities which are not normally covered during the school year.
• Tri-M Music Honor Society Adviser: Mrs. Celeste Milukas
Description: The Tri-M Music Honor Society recognizes the academic and musical achievements of upper level students.
Description: The Phoenix is the most anticipated, totally student-produced, record of life at St. Bernard School. The staff is responsible for obtaining photographs of students, faculty and staff, sports, clubs and organizations, and various campus activities for layout in the yearbook. A supplement of graduation and end-of-year activities is produced during the summer months and distributed early the following school year.
