Frequently Asked Questions
Now I'm sure you have questions. Here are some commonly asked questions:
- How much is tuition? Tuition for high school students (grades 9 – 12) for 2009-2010 is $8,750 for a Catholic student registered with a parish, and $9,250 for others. Tuition for middle school students (grades 6 – 8) is $3,950 for a Catholic student registered with a parish, and $4,250 for others.
- Do you have any discounts? Families with multiple students simultaneously enrolled are eligible for a discount. Please contact the Saint Bernard Business Office (860-848-1271 x115) for details.
- Do you offer financial aid? Yes. Financial aid grants for high school students are based on need and administered on a yearly basis. An application must be submitted each year. The financial aid application is available online at www.factstuitionaid.com. The deadline for submission is January 5th each year. The financial aid fund ranges between $90K and $95K each year and is distributed to qualified need-based applicants. The generosity of our alumni, benefactors, and parents fosters this program. A parish subsidy for middle school students is available to Catholic families. SBS middle school is also a qualifying school in The Compass Scholarship Fund. Information about this fund can be obtained at: www.thecompassfund.org. Please contact the SBS Business Office at 860-848-1271, x115, for additional information or forms.
- Are there scholarships available to new students? Yes. We currently have more than twenty scholarships available to incoming freshmen.
- Tell me about your other fees. There is a non-refundable registration fee of $300 ($225 is applied to tuition). There is also an annual activity fee. For students in grades 9 – 11, the amount is $425 and includes the following fees: school yearbook (valued at $80 each), admission to all of our home athletic events (excluding hockey/swimming) and drama productions, Club, retreat, agenda book, library, technology, science, and art. The activity fee for students in grade 12 is $550 and includes transcripts and graduation fees, as well as those listed above. For students in grades 6 and 7, the activity fee is $270 and includes textbooks, yearbook, agenda book, athletic, library, technology, retreat, and admission to middle school and high school home athletic games/drama productions. The fee for students in grade 8 is $340 and includes graduation, as well as those fees listed for grades 6 and 7.
Do you wear uniforms at Saint Bernard School? Yes. High school girls have an option of gray skirt or slacks or a plaid skirt with a variety of shirt styles (with optional sweater) and boys have an option of a polo style shirt or an oxford shirt with a tie along with gray uniform pants. Middle school girls wear a plaid skort (culottes) with a polo style shirt (with optional sweater) and middle school boys wear an oxford shirt with a school tie and navy pants. A polo shirt is a warm weather option. Uniforms for all Saint Bernard students are purchased through "Donnelly's Apparel" (www.donnellysclothing.com). Used uniforms are often available from the SBS bookstore for a small donation.
- What about purchasing books? Middle school classes provide textbooks for students. High school textbooks are purchased online through Varsity Books. They sell new and used books and most books can be re-sold back at the end of the school year. We also have a bookstore within our school with designated hours each school day. The bookstore sells school supplies (such as posters, pens, pencils) and school paraphernalia such as tee shirts and sweatshirts, as well as cough drops and candy.
- Do you have sports available? Yes, indeed! We are proud of our athletic program and our 26 high school varsity sports available. Middle school students may participate in several interscholastic sports and sports clubs. We encourage our students to get involved in the extra-curricular activities to enhance their school experience. Check out the Athletic link to our website!
- What are your tuition payment options? We offer four different payment options:
Plan A: Single (full) payment due on July 1 Plan B: Two equal payments due on July 1 & January 2 Plan C: Ten equal payments due July through April ($38 processing fee paid direct to SBS required; monthly payments direct to SMART payment service by automatic bank deduction or coupon booklet) Plan D: Obtain tuition loan through "Your Tuition Solution"
Directions to SBS: Our 113 acre campus is just minutes away from I-395. Take Exit 79A (Rte. 2A) from I-395. At the end of the ramp, turn right onto Rte. 32. Go approximately 1 mile then turn left at the stop light. Welcome to Saint Bernard!
